Practicing yoga and mindfulness in the classroom is a fantastic way to help students become aware and in tune with their bodies and minds, and has been shown in many studies to increase their working memory, attention, academic skills, and self-regulation. It gets them moving and contributes to a happy and healthy lifestyle! For these reasons, myself and three other students from Vancouver Island University are preparing yoga kits for schools in our community. Our goal is to raise funds and receive donations in supplies to give the resources to teachers to easily practice yoga with their classes. So far we have received a donation of 10 children's yoga books called "The Yoga Game" from author Kathy Beliveau. We have collected almost a class set of used yoga mats from donations in the community. A local studio, Bent Tree Wellness, has held a couple karma yoga classes, with all proceeds coming to the Yoga 4 the Classroom campaign. Local media have also been a tremendous help in spreading word to the community. The Wave and The Wolf both advertised for free on their weekend programs, the Nanaimo Bulletin wrote up an article for their paper, and Shaw TV came to film the project to put up on their local community channel. If you have any donations you could contribute (used yoga mats, supplies, or funds) please go to our Go Fund Me page or contact From Large Mountains to Little Feet on Facebook.
UPDATE: At the conclusion of this campaign, and with the help of generous local yoga instructors who held a Yoga in the Park 13-Hour Yoga-thon, we were able to raise enough to supply two schools with a class set of mats, and donated kits to a number of schools in the community!
